Safety catches fitted to death fall tower block

Child restrictors were fitted to the windows in a block from which an eight-year-old girl fell to her death, the social landlord has said. Old Ford Housing Association said the windows at Sandall House, in Bow, east London, were fitted in 2004 and are a ‘tilt and turn’ design with child restrictors.

Another letter from Stevenage Homes clarifying what is faulty with the window restrictors. The letter states that if a window opens by: more than 100mm (4 inches) before needing further release (by some additional catch/latch/button/key), this indicates there is no restrictor or the existing restrictor is not working properly.

I have received a letter saying the windows in the Towers represent a category 1 threat under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System. This is the highest possible threat. This applies to all windows above the second floor which have no window restrictors fitted.

Sickness Rates at Stevenage Homes Second Highest in the County

Figures released by Stevenage Borough Council (SBC) show sickness rates at SBC to be the highest in the Hertfordshire, with Stevenage Home coming in second to bottom. The Comet story says absenteeism at the SBC has cost £422,329.
